Ollie Johnston

Ollie Johnston

Ollie Johnston was the last surviving member of Walt Disney’s celebrated “Nine Old Men,” a group of key animators handpicked by Disney himself.

As well as animating Mickey Mouse, Ollie brought characters to life for many films, including: Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, Mary Poppins, 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book.

I was honored to have a close friendship with Ollie and I visited him frequently.

While holding a drawing of a scene he animated for Bambi (pictured), Ollie said,“I don’t know how we pulled it off…except for the fact that Walt knew we could do it.”

In 2008, at the age of 95, Oliver Martin “Ollie” Johnston, Jr. passed away. I will always remember and be inspired by Ollie.

This photograph was taken with a Leica M6 Classic rangefinder, Tri-X 35mm film, and a f.2 Leica Summicron lens.

I nominate Phil Hatten to post five B&W photographs, for five days, one a day, and nominate five photographers each day!
